Will Robots Replace Your Pet ... and Maybe Even You?
The concept of intelligent robots - machines that look, perform and even think like humans - has long been a popular theme in science fiction books and movies. From Isaac Asimov's "I, Robot" short story in the 1950s to the 2004 Will Smith movie of the same name, from the clunky nameless "Warning, Will Robinson" mass of metal on Lost in Space to the humanoid android Data on Star Trek, sci-fi treatments of the subject have fascinated us.
To many, the whole idea of robots that are capable of taking the place of people seems like a figment of an overactive imagination. But the sciences of robotics and artificial intelligence (IA) are converging to create some exciting (and in some cases scary) possibilities.
